An important area of education that is often given too little attention by schools is extra-curricular. My own personal development benefited particularly from involvement in music, scouts, and sailing. Of these, the one I’ve been inspired to pay forward is sailing. I volunteer with Ocean Youth Trust Scotland. When I was at school I did four voyages with sail training organisations and looking back they provided me with relatively big (compared to other activities I spent much more time on) changes in my self-reliance, teamwork and leadership abilities. I’ve also got life-long positive memories of them. I recommend every student should try it.
