In Memoriam: Alastair Holmes (HBS 1979–1986)

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Alastair Holmes, who died on 2nd July 2025 after living courageously with lung cancer for several years. Alastair attended Hitchin Boys’ School from 1979 to 1986 and is remembered fondly by all who knew him. After leaving school, he led an accomplished and independent life in London, with a career in financial services that took him across the UK and Europe. He began with a Saturday job as a cashier at Abbey National in Hitchin, progressing to branch manager and later to a senior role in Risk Management with Lloyds Banking Group. Even after retiring, Alastair remained active in the sector, helping several financial start-ups to grow. He also remained close to his school friends—Patrick Holmes, Richard Farr, Brad Ewin, Chris Wright, and Tim Woodward—with whom he shared a lifelong bond. They supported him with great devotion during his final days. Alastair was a passionate traveller and a believer in living life to the fullest. Following his diagnosis, he joined a Europe-wide Stage 3 chemotherapy drug trial, remaining on it longer than any other participant. This gave his loved ones two precious extra years with him, and the drug has since gone into full production—leaving a legacy of hope for others. Since his passing, tributes have poured in from colleagues, friends, and organisations he supported, all praising his warmth, encouragement, and generous spirit. His absence will be deeply felt. We send our heartfelt condolences to his brother, Vincent Holmes (HBS 1977–1985), and to all of Alastair’s family and friends.
